Bees

Well hello there! I know its been a very long time for before a last posted but I’m back! Today I thought I shall post about Bees. Bees can sometimes be annoying with that buzzing noise, but also when they keep flying around everywhere. Bees are closely related to Wasps and Ants. Bees are found on every continent apart from Antarctica! Bees have adapted to be feeding on Nectar and Pollen. Bees have a complex tongue that enables them to obtain the nectar from the flowers.

The best known Bee species is the European Honey Bee, which actually produces Honey.

The African Elephant

Hello people, its been quite a long time since I have written on this blog. But, I will start to post some new animals. If you want me to write, about a parcticular animal then please comment. Today, I will be writing about the African Elephant. What do you automatically think of when you think about Elephant? Most likely trunk! Elephants trunks are quite long! An adult elephant’s trunk is about seven feet long! Amazing eh? Another fact, is that when an elephant drinks, it sucks as much as 2 gallons! The African elephants exposed to sun most of the time, so they use their trunks to keep them selfs cool. So basically, like an air conditioner!

Its not just the trunk they use to cool them self down. Also, they use their ears to keep them self cool. Elephants usually use their trunks, and suck water and spray themselfs to keep them self cool. Its quite awesome 😀

I hope you have enjoyed reading, and you keep commenting!

Thanks again for everything,

Snakes

Todays animal is a Snake.

Snakes are elongate, legless, carnivores reptiles. They do not have legs and they slither along the ground. In the United States, only copperheads, coral snakes, rattlesnakes, and water moccasins have posinous bites.

Snakes have a long, legless, flexible body that is covered with dry scales. When snakes move about on land, they usually slide on their belly. Snake’s eyes are covered by clear scales rather than movable eyelids; therefore, their eyes are always open. They repeatedly flick out their narrow, forked tongue, using it to bring odors to a special sense organ in the mouth.

Snakes belong to a family called  reptiles. This group also include crocodiles, lizards, and turtles. As with the other reptiles, snakes maintain a fairly steady body temperature by their behavior. They raise their temperature by lying in the sun or lower it by crawling into the shade.

There are about 2,400 species of snakes in the world. They live almost everywhere, in deserts, forests, oceans, streams, and lakes. Some are ground dwellers, others live in trees, and other snakes spend most of their lives in water. There are a few areas where snakes do not live. They cannot survive in places where the ground stays frozen the year around, so they are missing in the polar regions or at high mountain elevations. Several islands, including Ireland and New Zealand, do not have snakes.

The Dodo

The Dodo was a flightless bird. This bird is a famous example of an animal being complety wiped out by man. This bird died out around about 300 years ago. The dodo has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century.   The Dodo was discovered in 1598 and extinct by 1681.

In the year 1598 AD, Portuguese sailors landing on the shores of the island of Mauritius discovered a previously unknown species of bird, the Dodo.

The dodo bird, historically, has been viewed as a rather plump bird, weighing approximately 20-23 kilograms. The dodo is grey in colour.  The dodo has a large, hooked beak and plume of white feathers adorned the rear of the dodo. Despite its large build, the dodo had small, weak wings which could not lift it into the air. Few bones or relics remain of the dodo today. Without complete skeletons, it is impossible to estimate the true size of the dodo bird. While modern estimates range from around twenty to twenty-three kilograms, initial portraits of the bird show a much slimmer creature. Work has been done by museum curator Andrew Kitchener, which suggest that the dodo could have been as light as between thirteen and seventeen kilograms.

The nests of the dodo bird were, by necessity, built on the ground as the bird was flightless. Dodo eggs were trampled and eaten by such creatures, and the ability to repopulate the species after hunting of the bird was seriously affected. While the dodo had existed for centuries or more in the natural Mauritian environment, the impact of mankind through hunting and the introduction of new predators placed too great a strain upon the dodo. Soon it was lost to the world. 😦

Back To Animals!! Bald Eagle!

Todays animal is….  the Bald Eagle!!

The bald eagle is a weird name… , but lets start with all the facts and what it is…

It is the national  and symbol  of the United States Of America.  Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska .

Its classifiable brown body makes it easy to view from distance. When flying, the bald eagle very rarely flaps its wings, but soars instead, holding its wings almost completely flat.

Diet

Eagles primarily eat fish, carrion, smaller birds and rodents. Eagles are also known to prey on large birds and large fish.

Population

Bald eagle numbers in the U.S. were estimated to be between 300,000-500,000 in the 1700s. Numbers were once as low as 500 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states. Bald eagle numbers have rebounded since and now the lower 48 states boast over 5,000 nesting pairs. There are a total of about 70,000 bald eagles in the whole of North America (Including Alaska and Canada).

Range

Bald eagles live near bodies of water in Canada and Alaska, and in scattered locations all throughout the lower 48 states and Mexico.
